Testing Mag Wiring

Jim P

Well Known Member
I'm in the process of wiring my Slick mags and have the 18 AWG shielded wire connected to the mag. Center conductor goes to p-lead, shield goes to mag ground stud.

Now for the really dumb question; how in the world do I test the wiring for the mag? I thought if I went tested resistance between p-lead to ground, it would show good connectivity with toggle switch OFF. Well, it shows the same with both ON and OFF. Matter of fact, I have good connectivity between p-lead and ground on the un-wired mag as well.

Any help?

You must test your wiring with it disconnected from the mag. If the points in the mag are closed, it will show a closed circuit regardless of the switch position.

Disconnect only the P-lead

The best way would be to just disconnect the P-lead at the magneto ....then use an ohmmeter to check for continuity from the P-lead magneto wire end to the magneto ground terminal.

A short is safe, i.e. magneto OFF.

An open circuit is magneto ON.

Just an expansion of what Mel said....
