Suggested Spin On Oil Filter for YIO-360-A1B6

I emailed to TEMPEST with a request for their recommended "Spin On" Filter for this Lycoming Engine. YIO-360-A1B6 Their Result: "Thank you for contacting Tempest. I have no specific data on the Lycoming YIO-360-A1B6 engine. What filter are you currently using?" Not the answer I was hoping for, the log book shows an early Overhaul was performed at 900 Hours SNEW due to installation and use of wrong oil filter during Covid filter shortages. Can any of the Forum mechanical Gurus please make a suggestion for the correct filter? (BTW it is in my RV7A, not in my RV10)

Lycoming has used two different thread on their oil filters over the years.

Looking up your IO-360-A1B6 engine model Lycoming Parts Catalog, (ignore the Y as that = EXPERIMENTAL) I came up with a "INSERT, Helicoil, 3/4-16 x 1-1/8 long" being used on the accessory case. In the same book, it lists two different filters. "54D19625 - Oil FILTER, Textron (short· with stud)" and "54D19627 [for dual magneto] OIL FILTER, Textron, (short· no stud)".

Using the chart that Aircraft Spruce has online,

You will need one of the last four filters listed in the chart. Change AA to CH if you want the Champion filter.

My 1960 vintage Lycoming O-320 engine uses 13/16-16 female thread filter to mate to the stud on the oil filter adapter.

Lycoming Secret Decoder ring -- see attached excerpt from Gary's links.

The YIO-360-A1B6 uses the 54D19625 -- which is the same as AA48110-2 or CH48110-1.

The YIO-360-A1B6D uses the 54D19627 -- which is the same as AA48108-2 or CH48108-1

Wot Happened?

Curious about what actually happened with the wrong filter installation triggering an overhaul.

1. A remote mounted filter could have been plumed in the wrong direction.
2. A filter without relief valve installed on an adapter without a relief valve.
3. What really happened?......

Unknown Oil Filter

I had earlier contacted the shop that performed the Overhaul and questioned them about a reason for an early Overhaul at 900 hrs. Response: Morning! The engine suffered oil starvation in flight due to an issue with an oil filter. There was no known prop-strike, and the owner at that time wanted to go completely through the engine to meet criteria for an Overhaul. There was no damage found internally and all internal parts recertified. The engine was reassembled with all new parts as specified by S.B. 240. If you have any other questions, feel free to contact us. ("the owner at that time") is no longer available to shed light on this mishap. Conclusion: "Precautionary Overhaul".
So, I am going with the recommended filters mentioned in this thread and have confidence in their advice. Thanks to all the great experience and wisdom on this Site!! Ed S.
