Starters

OK, so I read through the threads on alternators. Seems as if the B&C unit may be a better way to go.

Throughout the threads, though, comments on the starters kept coming up.

Sooooo, what say you on starter choices? I was considering the Skytec product but there seemed to be some dissatisfaction out there with this unit...

My Barrett Precision engine came with a Sky-Tec starter. No complaints so far.

If your 540 currently has a LS series installed, order a NL immediately and change it out as soon as possible. Before you install the NL, change out all the #10 attaching bolts with drilled head aircraft bolts and safety wire as appropriate. Plan to re torque and re locktite all other fasteners at every oil change.

Field wound starters are superior to PM units IMO, that narrows the choice to the Skytec NL/HT or the B&C. My original B&C still cranks like a new one.
