Just wanted to let everyone know about a new flying program we’ve started in South Carolina. It’s called the South Carolina Aviation Medallion; intended to help support and promote aviation in the state and the southeast region. It is a commissioned artwork, handcrafted from nearly two pounds of bronze into a large aviation-themed disc. One side depicts the first aircraft in the state of South Carolina, first flown July 4, 1911. The reverse side asserts the medallion’s name, the South Carolina Aviation Medallion.
It's purpose is to support, promote, and celebrate all forms of aviation in the state. Aviators are encouraged to fly the medallion, along with its commemorative logbook, on their personal and business flights. As the medallion and its carrying case travels, pilots are invited to chronicle the events of each flight in the accompanying logbook. An attached tracking device makes it possible for enthusiasts to follow the medallion’s journey from airport to airport and state to state via a dedicated website.
The medallion's first flight was Saturday, 17 January, 2015 from its home airport of Ridgeland, SC (3J!). It is already averaging about a flight a day including some in experimentals (an RV-8 was the first RV). I anticipate that over the coming months, RV’s are likely to fly the medallion as much or more than any other kind of aircraft. Please be on the lookout for the medal if it comes to your airport and if you get a chance to fly it please do so, then log it in and pass it on! Don’t forget to charge the tracker too if you get a chance. You can find more details of the program on the Medallion’s website: www.scavmedallion.com.
