SOCAL - Where Should I Go for Lunch Tomorrow?

Hey SOCAL folks - here I am at Big Bear, the weather is nice, and I don't necessarily need to walk across the field to the Barnstorm (unless folks want to fly in an meet)....where's a good On-Airport lunch joint within, say, 50 miles? Any groups getting together within a half hour flight?

Paul

Flo's @ CNO

Whenever I'm in the east LA basin, I make a point to stop in at the diner on Chino Airport. They make THE BEST homemade pies (The Millionaire is my favorite). Good food, great service, good prices.

Paradise

It is funny how paradise spoils you. When I want to escape, I contemplate going to Big Bear to eat lunch. I guess even Paradise gets old. My other choices are Catalina, either the airport or into town to see the babes on the Avalon Beach (not this time of year!), or Santa Ynez to play a little Blackjack right off the end of the runway and watch the old people loss thier SS checks. No seriously, Santa Ynez is cool because the casino is walking distance or they have a free shuttle. If you walk to the casino, the field you cross as a short cut sometimes contains cows, so get ready to run if they get pissed. The other place I like is Santa Barbara. My last choice is Pearblossom to rent a glider; no food on the field, but glider rentals and instructions. Hope you find another paradise.

Paul,
That's an easy one. Go to Bambi's Hangar One cafe at Hemet Ryan. Right down the mountain. Take off, cross the lake then pull it to idle and coast down!!!

Recommend the mustang breakfast. First place i am going when i get back to SOCAL this summer!

Dan

You are getting lots of good responses.

Hemet (L26) for Breakfast.
Apple Valley for Lunch. (BBQ restaurant that is VERY Good.)
French Vally (F70) Breakfast or Lunch
Murph's Gaslight Restaurant Bermuda Dunes for Dinner.

Someone said Chino. That would be Flo's and the weekends are busy. Better to go there during the week.

Flabob and Riverside also have restaurants. Got sick from the biscuits and gravy at Flabob late last year or early this year so all I can say is be careful what you get.

Do not forget Santa Monica. It is a short walk to the Spitfire Grill but there is typically a wait. Rosie is the one that should chime in.

You can always use http://www.fly2lunch.com/ to help you find a place.

There are LOTS of places. Just throwing at a few that others have not mentioned.

Great ideas guys - I'm thinking Apple Valley or Hemet for lunch tomorrow - guess I'll decide when I see which way the wind carries me. I've got to get used to the fact that I can do things on weekdays as well now....

X3 for Bambi's.

Bambi's hanger one cafe at Hemet. You can taxi right up and practically park in front of your table.

There's a trend here... I see now why Paul and Louise are moving; it's the fly-out food options! We have very, very few options here in the Houston area, which kinda sucks. Yep, I'm jealous of you SoCal guys.

Those of us based here have been known to meet for breakfast at one airport, fly to another for lunch, then after lunch fly to a third for pie.

All this would be around about an hour total flying time.

Will Fly for Food....is an excellent motto.

I need to come to Hemet soon. Not for the lunch, but to visit my dad who lives there.

Seems like you are bored. I know of a fastback RV-4 that could use some help. :)

Since you're now so free you can up and go crazy if you've a notion...Bambi's at Hemet for the burger, then hop on over to Flo's at Chino for the Millionaire pie.

Then watch your weight and balance change.:D

Ate there when I was in Chino....good food...

Thanks again for all the ideas guys. I met up with Condor at KAPV and tried their BBQ - far different than TX, but good in it's own way.

Tomorrow - breakfast at Rosamond with Rosie - of course!

Good eats!

Glad to have Ironflight over to L00 and the Golden Cantina Restaurant for Brunch! I thought this a good thread to post this as I put this out a few months ago to some local RVers looking for somewhere to go.

Here's a list of flying destinations with the farthest just over an 1 hr :) No particular order, and most all have food on-field.

look for the railroad cars (10% pilot discount), can also walk into town
to Pismo beach, west out of the airport)
Woodlake
Harris Ranch
French Valley
Gillespie
Montgomery
Hemet
Porterville
Furnace Creek (Death Valley)
San Luis Obispo
Santa Maria

Big Bear: on-field but I prefer Thelma's which is 1 block south (or east) then one block east (or south)
