This picture was taken last Saturday at Furey Airport, Ohio. Bernie pulls up after a smoking low pass.

Ahhh, what do they know?

Seriously, it looks like they're checking their cameras to be sure they got the shot. Appearances can be deceiving.

I like this photo... The youngsters are looking at their gadgets, the adults are looking at the airplane, except the old guy who is looking at the young girls.

mcb :)

Great Photo Ted!!

Info: The RV7a in the pic belongs to one of our FAVORITE Ohio Valley RVators.....the one and only Bernie Ockuly. Also, John has a BEAUTIFUL grass strip which he generously shares with us OVRVators. This was our annual 'UFO at Crossfire's Place'. It doesn't get any better when it comes to a grass roots family flying affair! Plus....Ted picked me up and gave me a ride to the UFO in his RV9a. I've flown my share of RV's but this was my 1st in the 9.....YES....I was impressed!

Oh yea...the F1 is just about done :D.

Texting

The girls are texting something like "Still stuck with my Dad at the boring airport"

the boy in the blue shirt is texting " you should see the two hot chicks here"

And the old man is thinking, "Oh, I remember how it was before I needed Viagra!"

Maybe the gals are checking their address book to make sure "that pilot guy's" number is in there!

OK, it's a good fantasy...now where's that link to the deal on the smoke system.... :D

Great photo by the way!!

Thanks. The system is from www.smokingairplanes.com
Best money I ever spent.
It took longer to open the box, than it did to install it ( Well, not really, but it is a very nice set up, especially for the RV's) The REAL plus is it doubles as a "VCAS" Visual Collision Avoidance System. I have lost count of the times other aircraft have been able to report " Got the traffic in sight"
Oh, BTW, those "gals" are both John's "daughters". . . (inside joke):)

Bernie,

Thanks for the link! Lots of great info!

Any recs as to whether the 3.5 gal or 5.5 gal tank would be better in the baggage compartment of a -6? 3.5 gals may be plenty for casual smokin' (and cool fly-by's, like yours!) Is there any noise from the pump?

Looks like the next project is already in the hopper! (Wife's gonna kill me!) ;)

Thanks again!

Cheers,
Bob

OK, this has go on long enough. This pic is from a fellow OhioValley RVator and I guess it's time to post the "before the pull up smoking pic". The girls are actually checking their cameras to see if they got the shot, not realizing the best pic was yet to come. This is the prior pic:

I do agree the boy in the blue shirt is probably not there to see the smoking hot airplane but the smoking hot girls:)

So, spoil our fun:rolleyes:

To tell the truth, I had noticed the camera straps in the first photo, but the thread drift was quite entertaining, so I just kept quiet:D

Beautiful Bird!

Bernie,

I was interested what your plane looked like close up. I ran your tail number on Google and came up with these beautiful pictures that the infamous airliners.net seems to always be able to come up with.

http://www.airliners.net/photo/Untitled/Van's%20RV-7A/1211275/L/&width=1024&height=695&sok=WHERE__%28reg_%3D_%27N914E%27%29_&sort=_order_by_photo_id_DESC_&photo_nr=3&prev_id=1246448&next_id=NEXTID

These guys must have a satellite camera that can zoom in and take photos of every airplane out there! It is amazing how many planes you can find on their site just by running tail numbers! They even have a photo of my spam can. Not sure why since its just a 172!

Hopefully they will have a better photo of my RV-7A when it is completed and painted!

Which system for a -7?

Hi.

Have anyone installed this system in a flying -7?

Would it be possible to install it behind the aft bulkhead? (Behind the baggage area)

Which non inverted system would be best for a completed -7? (I am thinking of which of the different pump-loaction types would provide the best fit)

Which tank size would you people recommend?

Thanks

What kind of smoke fluid are you using? Diesel? Also, any idea what the discharge pressure of the pump in the system?

I've got a home-brew system that smokes fairly well. I believe it could stand to have the second injection point, but just haven't spent the time to buy and install the pieces.

If you do a search here I think there has been some good discussion on smoke oils. I've pretty much tried everything, but settled on Corvus oil (concrete form release oil) as the best bang for the buck leaving a terriffic trail. Of course the best is Super Dri, but it's also the most expensive. I bought a barrell of concrete form release oil a year or two ago (before oil prices started climbinb), so I don't know what it goes for now, but I think I paid around $200 for my barrell.

I too have the smoking airplanes system and gotta say it's truly one of the best kits of any kind I've ever used. I installed mine years ago when they were relatively new, but lots of my friends have been installing them over the past years and the kit is really slick.

I don't think you need multiple injection points. I can leave as much smoke as I want with one injector. See:

http://www.steinair.com/videos/RV%203.wmv

http://www.steinair.com/videos/RV%205.wmv

Two injectors would just burn up the oil REALLy fast or make for an even messier belly!

If you're going to roll your own, the pumps are rather common 12VDC pumps that can be had from places like Northern Tool. Don't know the pressures for sure, but I have a small valve in between the pump and injector. Overall, I'd just say buy the pre-made kit, it installs quickly and easily, plus it's a known quantity (and I can pull the tank out of the bagge compartment in minutes if I need to as the system has quick disconnects on the wire and hoses).

My 2 cents as usual.

Cheers,
Stein

Thanks for the info.

You're getting about as much smoke as I am with one injector and diesel. I'm using a low pressure electric fuel pump with a solenoid valve (to prevent siphoning and dribbling). Also have the quick removal system in my (-8) front baggage. I found a red plastic boat fuel tank that fits perfectly in the baggage opening. Hydraulic quick connects for the smoke fluid. Electrical quick connects for the power. Works pretty good.

Just an FYI, but I've used a lot of diesel and other things and I can guarantee you from experience that the diesel smoke is nothing compared to the corvus smoke, especially for smell, hang time, color, etc.. Do some Cuban's with Diesel and then with Corvus and you'll see what I mean. All of the paraffin based oils will provide you with much better smoke in the end. Of course you can use just about anything, diesel works - been there done that! :)

One other thing - in those video's the valve is set open at about 1/8th. It'll output twice as much smoke if you want to burn the oil quicker, but If I opened it up any more (to something crazy like 1/2 volume), the poor people on the ground with the camera would have been smothered. I rarely ever open the valve up past 1/4 unless I really want to put on a show and go through the entire tank of smoke oil a lot quicker! Open the valve up beyond 3/4 or to almost full output and now it'll pump oil quicker than it can be turned into smoke....creating the nasty belly syndrome.

Anyway, sounds like you have a nice setup!

Cheers,
Stein

Matt has it.....

Couldn't have said it better!

roll your own smoke

I just completed my smoke system yesterday. Due to my friend Ken Rieder's 55 gal. drum of corvus/canopus/concrete form oil being empty i decided to test with some Jet-A. I put about a half gallon in the tank and verified the pump and solenoid were working, fired up the engine, turned on the pump, hit the stick switch and made some smoke. Cool! Cowled it back up and headed down to KLUK to meet up with "Greese","Joker","Wizz",and "Zinnie" for a 5 ship. In the air the Jet-A made some really good smoke.
Later after stealing some of "Greese's" smoke oil and testing it in the air I found that it makes REALLY GOOD SMOKE, with superior "Hang Time" to the Jet-A.
The dilemma now is, Jet-A = no belly residue and little hang time. Or Expensive smoke oil, great hang time, nasty belly.

I'd be interested in "Kahuna"s thoughts on mixtures/concoctions.

For anybody that has, or is building an 8, if you don't put a smoke system in that forward baggage compartment you are really missing out. It is so easy to do it's not funny.
If anyone's interested I'll compile a list of components and post pix of the system. Otherwise I'd say just get the "Smoking Airplanes.com" system and be done with it.
