Skin Lap Joints

Hi guys, I'm just about to the pont where I'm going to start wing skin work and am wondering what the proper method of making a nice lap joint on the IB/OB skins would be. I think if I use the small hand seamer I have I'd end up with small nicks where the seamer starts and stops. I thought I read that sombody figured out a way to bend the whole width of the OB skin. Thanks guys.

Scarf joint - bottom wing skins

Hi,
You only need to do a section (triangle shaped) about 3 - 4 inches on a side.

See Dan Checkoways's web site-

do 6 or 7 page downs, look for the following Caption:

Well, before I could mount the tank on the spar, I wanted to work on the scarf joint (where the top skins overlap) before the tank skin got in the way. I marked the general areas where I wanted to blend. Yadda, yadda. I sanded down the scarf joint. I actually went a little too far. I might have to do a little filling to make it look perfect, although we'll see how it comes out after it's riveted together.

I did the scarf joints and they turned out fine but I'm thinking the top skin is going to lift slightly when I rivet them together. (that is along the width of the skins) I thought a lap joint would be needed to prevent this.

Ted-

Cleaveland Tools sells an edge forming tool for just this:

Avery sells one too (which I use), but most people agree this is the better version.

Ted,

I cut a section out about 1" x 2" and made the perfect lap joint. Its on my website and it was also pointed out on this one. Works great and spend the money on the edge roller from Brown's and you will love it. Don't even think about buying the one with the wooden circle, it is a good frisbee.
