Sika question

A question for those who have Sika Flexed their canopies; The Sika Web site instructions state the following;

"Lightly sand the bonding surface with Scotchbrite or similar grit sandpaper. Remove dust. Using a clean, lint free cloth wipe the surface with SikaCleaner? 226. Wait 10 minutes. Paint on a thin coat of SikaPrimer? 209. Wait 30 minutes " (http://www.sikaindustry.com/ipd-marine-window-295)

I read that as saying apply the primer and wait. However, some builder sites that I have visited state that after applying the primer you have to apply the 295 within 30 mins , which is it ?

I read it to wait 30 minutes before applying the Sika. I would think the primer would need some time to cure before going any further. at least that's what I did.

sika question

Thanks Jim, and how long did you have to work with the Sika after the 30 minutes ?

Sika

After the 30 minute primer cure, you should do the bonding within the next hour. If for any reason you are delayed more than an hour, re-prime.

I did mine over a year ago, but if my memory serves me correctly, I think the wait time was after 30 minutes but less than 2 hours. Either way, once my clock hit 30 minutes, it only took 15 or 20 minutes to lay up the bead of sikaflex and put in a nice fillet.

After assembly, to further fill the gap between the two parts with extra material. Usually with a slightly radiused finish.

Link didn't work, but I fixed it above.

I bonded mine a few weeks ago. On the primer, it's more than 30 minutes but less than 2 hours. Even on a hot (90 degree) day, there was plenty of working life with the 295UV. The primer starts to gel and harden very quickly though. I had to apply it fast in order to avoid coverage gaps and lumps. Were I to do it again I'd have primed it early in the morning when it was cooler.

You can download the Sika product data sheets for 295UV, 209N primer, 226 cleaner, etc, here: http://www.sikaindustry.com/ind/ipd-pds_msds.htm
