Seaming pliers

I'm about to buy a set of HVAC seaming pliers. Will a 6" wide set be okay for general use or should I get a 3.5" set?

Thanks,

You might want to think about getting the the custom ones from Avery. HVAC ones have sharper noses and are designed for forming more malleable sheet steel that can safely take a sharper radius. The Avery ones have thicker jaw plates with gentler tip radii to form the bigger bend radii needed for structural aluminum. As for length 3 or 4 inches works fine.

I own HVAC, Avery (vice-grip style), and Cleaveland.

I prefer the Cleaveland and use them most of the time, but I also use the Avery in some areas since the shape is different.

HVAC stayed in the toolbox with my other HVAC tools once I tried them on some scrap...Jsharkey is right-they form too sharp a bend for aircraft use.
