The right step on my RV10, N810RK broke off at about 260 hours TT. The nearly vertical part broke off from the tube that goes into the airframe. It was constructed with a piece of 1/8” flat stock welded between the vertical and horizontal pieces. There was zero penetration of the base metal. It broke where the 1/8” flat stock was welded to the horizontal tube. The weld was paper thin in that area. I bought 2 new steps from Van’s and sanded them down and got them painted. The welding looks better on the recently purchased steps so I hope that I have no further trouble. I was glad I put inspection covers over the step bolts in the baggage compartment. They were still difficult to change, but possible.
