RV-10 *back* Seats

I know there is a supply issue affecting RV-10 front seats, but while I wait for my finishing kit (which will hopefully contain those front seats), I had some questions about the rear seats.

I believe the standard (kit-supplied) rear seat is a bench seat with no headrests. I have also seen other variations in the wild:

• 60/40 split seats with headrests
• two bucket seats with an elevated area between them
• two bucket seats with nothing between them
• two bucket seats with armrest/cupholder between them

I'm trying to figure out if I need to order rear seats for my RV-10 and, if so, what would work out best for me. Here are some pics/info that I have found out in the wild (and on VAF).

What to put between them? O2 system? I'm not sure if these are the Aerosport seats or not but an idea.



It looks like this is from Flightline but will it make the rear seat too cramped for two adults?

And, finally, this looks like a great option -- cupholders but without making the rear seats smaller. But I don't have a source for this.

In 2010 the standard Vans-supplied rear seats were foam-only (no upholstry), two individual seats (seat cushions and seat backs), no headrests. There is a space between them, I wouldn’t call it a ‘bench seat’.

That's what it still is. Just 4 individual pieces of foam. They are to be covered and velcroed in place. Minimally adequate in my opinion.

Perhaps something has changed. Both of my RV-10 builds only have the aluminum parts to make the rear seats, no foam. I’m expecting my long awaited front seats to arrive with foam, no upholstery.

Carl I believe this has been the case for a while. I added rear seat (uncovered foam) to my finish kit order as an extra item that vans sells. It showed up packed into my finish kit. I placed the foam order through the online store and asked if they would add it to the finish kit order for shipping in the order notes (and if not to ship it cheapest method).

I got my rear seat foam from Oregon Aero and had my seat guy add about 2 1/2" inches of foam across the top of the backs and rounded the ends for additional head rest and it also looks very nice. Adding additional foam and covering between the seats that will attach with velcro to make appear as a solid seat.

I modified the back seats so they look like the front seat profile. But i Cant quite figure out what's the best way to fix the botton part of the rear seat to the bottom of the aircraft.

The cushion? It just velcros to the floor…

I got my rear seat foam from Oregon Aero and had my seat guy add about 2 1/2" inches of foam across the top of the backs and rounded the ends for additional head rest and it also looks very nice. Adding additional foam and covering between the seats that will attach with velcro to make appear as a solid seat.

Hey Bearman, what's your experience with Oregon Aero foam? I'm considering buy that to replace the -9A stock seat foam.
Just the Oregon Aero foam by itself is not enough? that's the reason you added more foam? Do you have any pictures? Tks.

Yes, they are from Lemke. I have not installed yet so can’t say about seatbelt removal

The stock Van’s seat foams are good. Oregon Aero covered my front and rear seats. We probably fly with the rear seats out at least half of the time hauling bikes and stuff. Rear seats and seat rest are easy to remove. Not sure if head rests for the rear seats are necessary but it’s a personal choice. Unless your hauling passengers more than not you might consider just going with the standard rear seat configuration.

I sniff around here once and awhile - To answer your question - No - The Seat belts do NOT need to be removed to get the seats out. They are for lack of another word Slits cut into the foam where the seat belts are installed. You can install the seat belts while the Upholstery is removed, then install the foam and feed the seat belts through the slits.

I have the south Florida Sport rear seats and am very happy with them.
The seatbelts are Crow with the rotary buckle.
It’s not practical to remove the cushions leaving the belts in with this setup. It’s way too tight a fit to get the slits over the adjustment buckles easily let alone the rotary latch. It can be done but it’s very tedious.
I remove the rear seats probably 3 times a year and it’s straightforward to just unbolt the harnesses and leave them in the cushions. Can have them out in a matter of minutes.
