RV-10 AOG at KLEM

Tried leaving this morning for KSBX then Canada . Got :5 minutes out and oil temps went to 226 and climbing rapidly with oil cooler wide open. Returned to airport. Mechanic thinks it’s a vernatherm. Only 140 hours on engine. Can they fail this new?
I have the upgraded cooler and it’s never done this in the past.
Any help appreciated. ACS has one in stock but may have to sit here till Monday or Tuesday.

Probe seems ok with IR gun, cooler is clear
Going to pull vernatherm and test it with heat gun.

getting to 225 in 5 minutes seems a bit suspicious if no squirters and 540's usually don't have them. do you reemember the temp at take off? have never really paid much attention to how quickly i get to 170, where i believe the VT starts moving. i will get to 190's in the climb in the summer, so cooling clearly required. piston squirters totally changes things and OT can get out of hand at pattern alt with poor cooling.

No squirtters o this engine. Temp read out at start up was ambient. Then in the climb it started getting over temps what I normally see. If I could access the internet I’d upload my data to flysto and have more accurate data. Things happened fast and I was trying to pick up my clearance etc.
Mechanic has a VT that we are going to try. Just have to R&R the old one and see what happens.

Above statement makes me think you have a controllable shutter for the air to the oil cooler. Saw the exact same symptoms once with a new-to-the-airplane pilot who inadvertently had hit the not so well marked control knob, and closed the shutter. First thing I’d check is the shutter is open?

I hope that the vt works for you. Please let us know if that works. I wonder if temps can really climb that fast and this could be a learning experience for the rest of us.

Plus those firgelli linear actuators have a pretty short life expectancy in FWF applications in my experience. I changed all mine back to cables after 2 failures. This potential scenario was the motivation.

Tested the original VT. It’s expanding like it should. Shutter is wide open no issues with the linear acuator either.
We’re scratching our heads. Looked into where the VT seats. All looks good. Looking at the bypass for the B&C oil filter adapter.
This has got to be a pilots worst nightmare. Trying to get home from EAA Airventure and now this.
