Replacing instrument panel

I am considering replacing my instrument panel so that I can update some instruments and avionics. I am not the original builder so the question I have is the angle behind the top of the instrument panel necessary, and if it is, what does it do but maybe stiffen the panel ? Can it be left out of a new panel rebuild all together?

We replaced the panel on Louise's RV-6 about two years ago, and I can tell you that the angle definitely stiffens the assembly quite a bit. We didn't build a new one - just drilled the existing one of the old panel and matched-drilled the new panel for it. The angle serves as an excellent place for Velcro to attach a fabric "drip panel" that closes out the area between the panel and sub-panel. This does a good job of keeping moisture off the radios when the tip-up is open and there is light rain.

I'd keep the angle - it's not that hard to install.
