After spending all day talking with several FAA individuals, it has become apparent that you need three things to get an N-number (the thing you need to sched a DAR). You need the 8050-1 which you must pick up from a FSDO. You need a 8050-2 (Bill of Sale) which Van's will send you after you get the finish kit. Because you are Light Sport you also need the 8050-88A. On this one you must include the serial number of your engine. So let's hope the powerplant is next! They did say their turn-around right now is about two-weeks.

If all you want is to get a N number, you don't need to go through the formal registration process. You can reserve a N number from the FAA for a $10/year fee, then attach the number to your aircraft at registration time. The FAA online N number site can be found at http://162.58.35.241/e.gov/NN/resreqform.asp

A good tool to find an available number can be found at: http://nsearch.rvplane.com/

Thanks Bob but after talking with EAA, FAA and Vans, this is a little different...because its ELSA there's all kinds of paperwork that has to be provided by Vans before the FAA will consider the aircraft registered. Van's knows about it and is working their butts on it too. Now if I went EAB it would be alot easier but since the 51% deal is up in the air....no guarantees. THanks for the tip!

Did Vans have anything to say about a timeline for the S-LSA certification?

noooo.....just that they had an army of people working on the tremendous amount of paperwork involved with this project....far and away the most ambitious project they have ever taken on. There is no point in certifying the SLSA until they are satisfied the paperwork is where they want it.

Bob was not suggesting that you register the airplane. He was explaining that you can reserve the N number you want without registering the airplane. When you reserve an N number I am pretty sure you don't have to explain anything about what kind of an airplane you might want to put it on.
