Pro seal alternative

I’m working on the fuselage for my RV-8. The forward fuselage sub structure instructions say to apply a thin layer of fuel tank sealant to the surface of the forward floor assembly where it contacts the lower angle of the firewall assembly to prevent any wayward engine compartment oil from seeping into the cockpit area. I see that there will be more sealing around the firewall later on. I don’t have any pro seal (using QB wings so no fuel tank sealing for me).

What do you guys think is the best sealant to use here? Is RTV just as good as pro seal for this purpose?

Pro Seal would probably be the best.

But if you must do something else you might consider Permatex "The Right Stuff" either 1-minute or 90-minute gasket maker in black color. Very good elastomeric rubber flexible sealant that is bituminous-earth based. Way better than RTV silicon. Available at your local big box auto parts store or online.

Although common practice, it would be best to eliminate proseal from any sort of firewall assembly.

Have not heated any Right Stuff.

Dapco 2100 is very good, and being one-part, it's easier to use than other "real" firewall sealants, without waste.

3M FireBarrier 2000+ has held up well in my RV-8. Not quite as good as the Dapco in fire tests, but still pretty darn good.

Don't confuse silicone based fire sealants with common RTV products. Likewise, the "FireBarrier" name is on a whole list of 3M sealants, some of which are not at all suitable.

Dan, I just read through the entire thread you linked to. That was very informative, thanks for taking the time to run those tests. And thank you to everyone for your recommendations. Looks like I'll probably go with the 3M product.
