Oil suction screen - torque?

G

Geoff

Does anyone have a torque value for the oil suction screen nut in the sump?

I'm guessing 300 in-lb like the vernatherm and the oil pressure relief valve, but I can't find a reference in the Lycoming overhaul manual.

Thanks.

Superior's answer

Superior's answer was not in torque values but in degrees past finger tight. Look it up in their manual if yours is a Superior.

The chart is in the Lyc OH manual (spec and torque values chapter). I'm not sure if it applies when using an old gasket. I can't remember what that type of gasket is called.

By angle...

This is the chart that Steve refers to...
I am sure it is for new gaskets only... after all, a crush gasket is crushed during it's first (and only) use...:)
Note that there is also a correct orientation of the gasket.

Table 72-00-11.5 • Crush Type Gasket Tightening Angles

Description of Limit...........................Angle (approx.)
Oil Suction Screen Gasket ....................... 135º
Pressure Relief Valve Gasket.......................90º
Oil Cooler Bypass Plug Gasket....................135º

NOTE: Install Crush Gasket with seam toward aluminum case. Tighten thread until cap or valve body contacts gasket. Turn additional angle shown above. Lock wire in place.
