More sliders than tip-ups?

In all the photos I have seen of completed -9/9A's, my impression is that there are far more sliders out-there than tip-ups? Anyone have the data on this?

I personally think the -9A looks way cooler with the slider... ironically, I think it is the front roll-bar that give it this cool fighter look. But it is also that roll-bar that may make me choose tip-up... I don't like the idea of that sitting right in my primary feild of view! Don't mean to re-open the debate here... just wondering if anyone knows the ratio of sliders vs. tip-ups in completed -9As.

You can have both...

I have probably published as much about this subject as anyone with a flying RV-9A. I know a guy who built one of each. He started with a tip-up and now has a slider after the first one was flipped upside down in an off-airport landing. You can read about that and see both of his airplanes on my web site at this link: http://www.n2prise.org/TipSlide.htm. The pictures are at the bottom of the page.

My slider is also a tip-up for baggage access with the Meske modification. I also have a video camera mounted on the top left side of my instrument panel and the roll bar is not an issue of coverage from the video camera position. You can learn about the camera installation on this page: http://www.n2prise.org/rv9a212.htm.

If you want to see the videos I took going into and out of Oshkosh this year, look at this page: http://www.n2prise.org/rv9a228.htm.

About 30% Tip-Ups...

Hi Phil..

I have collected photographs of 179 different RV-9's & RV-9A's. This out of 247 that Van's website says have flown. Three are the Van's prototypes (N96VA, N129RV, N179RV) which I will exclude. Of the other customer-built RV-9(A)'s of which I have photo's, 2 have canopy covers on...so the canopy configuration cannot be determined. That leaves 174 customer-built RV-9(A)'s in my survey. Of these, exactly 50 have the tip-up canopy. That is 29%.

So I would estimate about 30% of customer-built RV-9's & RV-9A's are being built with the tip-up canopy.
