Vans will be raising prices next week, so I figured I might order the FWF kit for my RV-7A with IO-360A1B6 200 hp engine & CS prop. The current FWF kit costs $4870.
From what I have read in earlier threads, mix and match is the way to buy the FWF kit. I am considering the following mods to the standard FWF kit (see follow-on post for standard kit contents):
1. Delete the wiring harness, since I'm going IFR. As I understand it, the wiring harness is only good for the standard Vans VFR wiring scheme. List Price: $350
2. Delete the alternator, my engine already has a DOFF-10300J 15V 60A alternator, might need to rebuild it. List price $375
3. Delete the PROP GOV MT P-860-4, as I picked up a PCU 5000X from the recent group buy. List price: $1100
4. Delete OIL COOLER II, as my engine already has a Stewart Warner oil cooler (not sure how many rows, how many do I need for this engine?) List price $185
Some earlier threads have said that Vans doesn't take the list price of these items ($2,010) off the total kit price, but some fraction thereof. Can anybody who KNOWS how this works fill me in? (No guesses please
)
I have read that the Vans Heat selector valve (VENT TG-10) is aluminum, and that an aftermarket stainless version is available. The argument goes that the aluminum version could be quickly breached in an engine fire, defeating the purpose of a high temp capable firewall. Can anybody comment on this or provide the name of the aftermarket supplier with the stainless version?
What about Lord mounts vs. what Vans supplies? Should this be another change to consider? Or does Vans supply true Lord mounts?
What other changes have you made or should I consider?
Thanks to all for your input.
