Matco Wheels - 9A

Am I missing an all important tool, or do I just need to grind down yet another socket to be able to get at the bolt heads on the Matco wheels (mains - need to split the wheels to put the tire on)? I can get a socket on the nuts, but not the bolts themselves. I've run out of my stock of garbage sockets that I grind down to a paper thin wall on one side, so before I go out and buy another socket to sacrifice, I just want to find out if there's a different standard tool that I'm just missing.

Yes, the gap between wheel and bolt head is very tight. My good old vintage Craftsman deep sockets seem to be thin enough to get on the bolt heads.
