It's really misnamed as they do not balance anything. They absorb and remove unwanted vibration due to torsional twisting of the crankshaft. So if you're looking for a smoother operating engine, this helps. There are a ton of threads on these. Pull up a chair and a beverage and search "harmonic balancer" or "dampener".
