Is shimming required when installing engine?

Would like to ask the question out there if the engine mount can be mounted directly to the firewall without the need to be canted/shimmed? Or, are the shims placed at the engine mounts? If so, how was the determination made for shimming?
Thanks

Shimming??

No shims on my firewall!

Well not yet anyway, maybe when the engine has sagged, after a while, to get the engine back where it was before?

The washers under the mounts are to give clearance for the step in the engine bracket.

Regards, Tonny.

Hi Raymond..

..Van already has some right thrust built in. Just bolt it up to the firewall....he's way ahead. I believe there's also a little down thrust...I think.

What you do want to consider later, when you go to install your cowling, is to level the top of the upper cowling with the spinner since the rubber mounts seem to compress with time and a little engine sag becomes obvious, though not really a big concern.
