I recently downloaded a freebie iPhone app called "Bolt & Nut". I put it to use in the workshop yesterday. I was dynabolting some shelving to the wall and needed to use a socket to tighten the nut. But what size is it? Easy, drop, or rather, place, the nut on the screen, use the + and - soft keys on screen to adjust the calipers and voila, my phone tells me it is a 12mm nut. Pick up the correct socket and tighten it up.
The app can switch between metric and SAE, and can also tell you the thread pitch on bolts, and probably some other stuff I haven't got to yet.
