I have one of each with my VPX. The primary is internal and the backup is external.

It's kind of a religious discussion, with no correct answer, just personal preferences.

Looked at both, decided to go with the Plane Power internal. One less thing to wire up (external regulator), and internals have been proven to be reliable in the auto industry for many years now. If there is a failure, pull the alternator and replace it. Anyway, with externals I have been told you should replace the volt regulator if you replace the alternator, so either becomes a push if there is a failure.
