Insurance Tip: Updating your policy to full flight

Before you are ready to update your policy from builders risk to full flight, you may want to request quotes from your broker. The quotes are only valid for about 60-90 days depending on the insurance company, but this could help you to avoid any potential problems that may arise. Even though most people are eligible for a builder policy, not all pilots are eligible for full flight coverage if they don’t meet the insurance company requirements. However, sometimes it’s just a matter of getting additional time and/or training in the make and model.

If you are required to get dual training, be sure you are getting the training with a Certified Flight Instructor that has time in the same make and model. If the CFI doesn’t have time in the same make and model, please let your broker know so they can see if they can get the CFI approved by the insurance company. Sometimes training can be approved in other Vans models, but that would need to be approved by underwriting as well.

Even if you are using the FAA’s Additional Pilot Program for phase one flight testing, remember that you cannot get dual training in your aircraft during Phase One. Also, keep in mind, that although the FAA approves of this program, not all insurance companies are fond of this situation. If you plan on using this program, be sure to discuss this with your broker.

Have fun at Oshkosh!!!
