Hello! - Exhaust stainless steel material

in_idaho

I'm New Here
Hello!

I'm a recent RV-12 ELSA owner (last August). I have been lurking for a while and reading posts. Appreciate the wealth of knowledge available!

Unfortunately I find myself with my first question. I have almost completed my first condition inspection on the aircraft when I discovered the #3 exhaust tube is cracked right around the joint to the flange. I'm working with Van's (called them today) but I'm also trying to pursue repair options. I found a local shop that says they can make a repair, but they need to know the material.

Would anyone know what material/type of stainless steel that the tubes are made out of? Or alternatively, would anyone know the type of filler rod used for welding it together? This is for the EX-00044 system.

Thanks!
Scott

A gentleman on rotax-owner.com directed me to the Rotax 912 installation manual. All the info is there for a generic exhaust system, however aircraft manufacturers tailor an exhaust system to their specific needs, so I'm still waiting for confirmation from Vans for the various materials.

That said, here is what Rotax recommends for an exhaust system in the Rotax 912 Series Installation Manual 01/01/2021:

Exhaust sockets material: X6CrNIMoTi 17 12 2 (DIN 1.4571) (316 stainless steel) <---- (I looked this up based on the DIN provided)

Exhaust elbow X 15 CrNiSi20-12 (DIN 1.4828) (309 stainless steel)

Muffler Material: X 6CrNiTi 189 (DIN 1.4541) (321 stainless steel)

Tailpipe Material: X 5CrNi 189 (DIN 1.4301) (304 stainless steel)

Ball joint (male) Material: X 15CrNiSi 20, 12 (DIN 1.4301) (304 stainless steel)

Exhaust pipe Material: X 15CrNiSi 20, 12 (DIN 1.4301) (304 stainless steel)

Hopefully more to follow...

Received an email from Vans this morning confirming that their that their pipes are made per the Rotax specifications. That said, things change so if you come accross this thread, keep in mind that this info is for this point in time...
