Headset noise

Working through the PAP, and I have the following situation:

When running the avionics on the ground, off of battery power, engine not running, I get a lot of background static in my headset that I cannot squelch out. As soon as I say something over the intercom or dial in the ATIS on the radio, everything is clear, but when all is quiet (or should be quiet) I get the noise.

Doing a radio check, others can hear me fine.

Question: do I have a problem? Or will the cockpit noise during normal operations squelch out the noise?

Besides checking grounds, does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Just my experience - -

I was getting a slight buzzing/static type noise that would come and go. After talking to the I/C people, they said send it in. I thought I'd try something first. I took it apart and sprayed "electrical spray and lube", especially on the squelch control. SURPRISE - the noise went away. In my case, I think being in a cold climate caused corrosion within the control over a couple years. So far, so good. Been a few months, and still good.
