GPS Antenna and Ground Planes

Can someone clarify, does a GPS antenna need to be installed with a Ground Plane? I didn't think it did, but a discussion with another builder got me thinking and I realized I wasn't 100% certain.

Specifically, we are talking about mounting the antennas on top of the RV10 Fiber Glass canopy.

Nope. you don't carry a piece of aluminum with your handheld do you? I have 2 of them velcroed to the roof inside my overhead console. Works good. Ran all my overhead cables through the support bar.
