GEA 24 Fuel Sender

In the Garmin manual for G3X suggests fuel sender is a Skysports P/N FP1212V3 or a Westach capacitive sender. The concern I have a few questions?

1. Are these the right send for the RV-10 quick build wings
2. On the aircraft spruce web page they list their part numbers but not the manufactures part number for there are many to choose from. does anyone know the correct one to choose. Or is there another web page that makes it clearer?
3. Am I even reading the right sender requirements from the manual?

Thank-you in advance

Hello Andy,

For monitoring fuel quantity using capacitive senders with your G3X system and GEA 24 engine/airframe interface unit, you may use any sender that provides either a digital (frequency) or analog (voltage) signal output. Section 21.3.7.2 in the G3X installation manual states:

Capacitive fuel quantity sensors require the use of an external transducer to convert capacitance to either a frequency or a voltage.

Fuel quantity transducers that convert capacitance to a voltage of up to 28V may be used, including 0-5V and 0-12V transducers. Examples of this type of transducer include the Skysports and Westach units.

Fuel quantity transducers that convert capacitance to a frequency of up to 50 kHz may be used. Examples of this type of transducer include the Princeton, Vision Microsystems, and EI P-300C units. The transducer's output waveform must meet the requirements of the GEA 24 digital inputs (see Section 23.5.7).

As long as your capacitive fuel quantity sender outputs a compatible signal as described above, the exact brand or model number of sender does not really matter. You will later calibrate your fuel quantity inputs to reflect the actual measured quantity of fuel in the tanks.

The only guidance applicable to a specific vendor's capacitive fuel quantity sender has to do with electrical quirks of certain brands of sender, which are easy to work around. These are also described in section 21.3.7.2 of the G3X installation manual.

So in other words, the ones that can be purchased with the vans kit are perfectly fine?

Hello cderk,

Yes, the capacitive fuel quantity probes included in the Van's kit can work with the G3X system. However, a transducer (also sometimes called a sender) that converts capacitance to either voltage or frequency is also required, as described above.
