FlightCom 403 intercom question

When a radio transmission from another aircraft is strong enough to break the squelch setting, does that open the mic (or mics) in the cockpit of my plane?

The reason I ask is because it seems like when I have the intercom on Isolate, I get less background "shhhhh" receiving someone else's broadcast than when it is in the ICS position.

Make sure you take someone along on your next flight.
Then, with the volume control set at mid range and the squelch set at mid range, hit that person very hard on their shoulder or leg. If, you then hear something to the effect of "Why the $&@? did you do that!", coming thru your headset. Your intercom is working!
