Fitting a B&C Alternator with a snorkel intake RV8

Just figured I'd post this here, as I found nothing on it while searching.

Ditched my internally regulated denso alternator after the second one failed, possibly because of the hammering it takes from my EarthX battery.

Anyway, went with the externally regulated B&C L-40. The boss mount bracket B&C provides is nowhere close to fitting with the snorkel. Looks like a lot of guys just modify the fiberglass snorkel, but I just modified the bracket.

Re-drilling the bracket as shown gives you a good fit, using a 7350 belt. You'll need to trim the ears on the bracket as needed to fit. I didn't get a "before" shot, but the stock bracket is quite a bit taller.

Interesting. The B&C alternator and mount bolted right into my RV-8 and did not hit the snorkel. That was over four years ago so perhaps something changed.

I thought for sure I had somehow ordered the wrong bracket, so I called B&C and they told me they only have 1 style. I had to chop about 5/8" off the thing to get it to fit. The tricky part was locating that hole in a spot where you can still get the alternator to rotate down for enough tension before it also hits the snorkel.

Same here, B&C 60 Amp alternator and no interference with the snorkel.
I did modify the snorkel but it was to clear the B&C starter.IMG_7170.jpeg

Can you turn the bracket around? Looking at you photos it seems the bracket ears are not symmetrical.
Carl
They aren't symmetrical because that's how I cut them. Also, the boss mount holes are offset to align the pulleys. Here's a photo of the original bracket.
