Firewall passthroughs

I have the firewall passthrough sold by Bob Avery and their flange is too big to locate them over the holes already present on the upper/outer firewall (quick build fuselage). Two questions: Where is best location for the passthroughs, presuming one on each side? High up, above the horizontal angle where nothing else seems to live? Best way to cover or close the existing holes? (I guess that's three questions...bonus points?)
 
I'm using cannon plug pass-throughs and they are left and right over the engine mount. Here is a picture:

The grey squares are stainless steel patches pro-sealed and riveted over the pre-punched pass-through locations. I smeared proseal over the entire patch to cover the rivet heads, for good measure.
