FAB drain

How necessary is the FAB drain that Van specifies? I notice that they sell a sniffle valve, not specified in the plans, which is indicated (per the order page) only for engines with horizontal induction. Does that mean there is no need for any type of drain in vertical induction engines? Alternatives?

Induction drain in a FAB is as much or more for water as fuel. For a vert induction, just put a hole in the bottom of the FAB and call it done.

I just drilled a hole in the bottom to let the water out. No issues with fuel draining out in 400 hours.

Just one single instance of a flooded engine with a vertical induction system will have fuel pooled in the bottom of the airbox.
If you have no concern about letting that simply drain into the bottom of the cowl and then run off the aft edge, just use a drain hole.
If you would rather drain the fuel overboard to prevent a large build up of fuel fumes while it evaporates, then install the specified drain line.
