F705 Bulkhead - Exploded View Screw up

Fearless

Well Known Member
I was working on the F705 Bulkhead last night and gotten myself into a problem. The exploded view (drawing 20) doesn't show a matching rivet hole on the F605C doubler beside where the seat belt brackets are but the Front View Assembly drawing has you countersinking the rivet (4-8) position going through the F605C doubler and the F705B center section bar and the F705A rear spar attach bulkhead - where the first bend is on the doubler. I countersunk the center section bar at that location and have already riveted on the center section bar and rear spar attach bulkhead. I haven't riveted on the doublers to the center section and spar attach bulkhead yet.

I really would rather not have to take the pieces back apart and buy another center section stock. Will it be okay if I don't rivet through the doubler at this particular spot. And if that isn't okay would it be acceptable to put some JB Weld into the countersink on the center section and drill it back to a #30 and then countersink that rivet postion on the doubler and then rivet the doubler, center section and bulkhead together?

Looking for some feedback ,

I think I understand the question...

Mike-

The drawing is a little confusing partly because there is so much going on here, plus there are some errors in the exploded view (missing holes, fasteners going in one place coming out another...).

There are no rivets in the bar doubler in the joggle but the pieces behind that are riveted. However, inboard of the joggle the rivets go through all the layers of material and if I understand your post the hole in question is the one between the seat belt bracket and the joggle.

I'm a big fan of JB Weld but not in this case. This is major structure. I would call Van's and ask if there's an appropriate screw or bolt that you can use. That way drilling the larger hole for the bolt will eliminate the countersink and you'll have a fastener there. A bolt maybe overkill but better than no fastener.

Called Van's

I called Van's and talked to Tom in builder's support. He said to just countersink the doubler and go ahead and rivet leaving the air space on the countersunk center section rivet hole. He said using the JB Weld to fill the air space really doesn't do anything. So I'll go ahead and countersink the doubler and rivet the three pieces together. The rivet position inquestion sits under the seat belt attach bracket.

make a filler

you can make a filler from a rivet head. and i think you can buy them as well
