EZ-COWL - An Alternative Use

HFS

Well Known Member
EZ-COWL has an alternative use that I almost forgot about - to re-position the intakes (cooling & induction), if a plenum & round cooling inlets are contemplated and/or a new induction inlet is desired.

The attached pics from the Wayback Machine (circa 2000) show its use in re-making the cowl inlets for my Rocket.

Pretty self explanatory - Use of the tool for this purpose allows precise positioning of these inlets without the need for the attending part to be in place to "locate" them. Very convenient when trying to align the plenum inlets to the cowling rings for sealing the joint. Same for induction inlet.

The second pic shows the engine simulation jig that allowed the cowling mods to be done on a "rotisserie" for convenience.

YMMV - But this can be helpful if needed.

Another "Alternative"

You can also use the EZ-COWL tool to assist in marking the baffles for clearance from the cowling.

Once you get the baffles trimmed to just clear the underside of the upper cowl, you can re-install the the upper cowl, and then reach in with a DIY marker (pic shown is just one of many) to mark the top of the baffles.

The round "aspect" of the top of the marker is the clearance allowance between baffle & cowl. So, if you just push up the marker until it contacts the cowling, and then "mark" across the baffles, you should be left with a clear indication of where the top of the baffles need to be trimmed to.
