Does anyone have an external power plug on their RV-10? I?ve always liked those and would assume they should be near the battery but find no provision for one in my kit or even seen mention of one. Any thoughts?
I used Bob Knuckoll's design to put the Piper jack on the bottom of my RV-8. It's within 8 inches of my aft-mounted battery, and if I didn't have a placard showing it's location, no one would ever know it's there. Sure is nice for working on an all-electric instrument package - plug in and don't worry about draining the battery!
I added a "power port" aka cigarette lighter plug on my panel that is connected to the always hot bus with 18 AWG wire and a 7.5A breaker.
Granted you will have to leave your door open to access it.
I've used mine twice, once in Michigan when the temps were 15* above and the battery just didn't want to turn the engine over more than twice and this week when I found out a Young Eagle I flew last weekend had turned on my interior lights and left them on. These lights are also on the always hot bus so I don't have to turn the master on to use them. That connection may change.
I use a Battery Minder quick plug on existing aircraft. Attach the plug-in connection directly to the battery and route it to an area that is accessable from the baggage area or cabin. Much lighter, and the battery charger / conditioner is designed for AGM batteries.
Bart,
You'll have to fab it. How you do it will sort of depend on where you mount it (externally or internally accessable). I say that because I think an internal solution can be more flexable. For example, I wouldn't use a small section of piano hinge externally just because of cosmetics but I probably would on the inside.
Personally, I haven't thought this one through all of the way yet but I'm leaning towards externally accessible with either something like the oil door (hidden hinged on one side with a latch or camlocs on the other) or simply using camlocs or screws all the way around like an access cover. There's probably a million ways to skin this cat. YMMV.
