I am trying to find the FAA reg on what should be on the equipment list for day/night vfr flight. Can anyone assist since I need to make a list for certification.

Every FISDO and inspector is different. However I have never heard of anyone being asked for an equipment list. Instead they will tell you. The usual boiler-plate language in your operating limitations will say:
1. No requirement for day vfr
2. Abide by the above referenced FAR for night or ifr operations.

E-AB Equip list

I would swear I've read somewhere that a formal Equipment List is only required for Standard Catagory license, not E-AB

An equipment list, while desirable, is not required for issuance of an experimental airworthiness certificate.
