Double Drilled Holes

red beard

I'm New Here
During the assembly of the horizontal stabilizer you pre-drill a few holes in the HS-405 and use those holes to drill the rest of the HS-702, HS-710 and HS-404. I didn't do such a good job...see below.

This hole attaches the skin to the ribs

These four attach the four parts listed about together.

I'm really unhappy with how this turned out, but would like to know what you guys think. I'm pretty sure I'll be redoing these...

Update...the photos didn't work so here is the link

Good tip about not overtrimming the 404 front rib. Also when you drill the 405 to the spar and to 404/710/714 take care that you clamp everyhing together and make sure the whole HS can't move. It's much easier if you can have both hands on the drill and don't have to worry about the parts moving around. I also fixed the 810/814 (710/714 in your case) with some duct tape in order to keep them from bending away from the spar under the pressure of the drill:

Personally I'd replace them, cheap fix and it will make you sleep better. Dont feel bad, that was also the first part I ordered from 'the list'. Its a little tricky to get right, which you will the second time.

Parts Ordered

Thanks for all the great advice. I really wasn't happy with them, but I wanted to see what everyone else thought. I was trying to cut corners and not have to buy a new tool at the same time...we see how well that worked out. Now that I broke the ice and bought some replacements there might be a few other places I go back and redo. I spoke with Van's this morning and they said the HS-710/714 edge distance will be the most important aspect of the whole group, but the figure 8 holes were no good.
