Dash panel question

Charles in SC

Well Known Member
In looking ahead in my assembly manual I did not see anything about when is the time to build and install the panel. Does anyone care to comment on this?
Thanks in advance!

We're near that point as well, Charles...

...but from our experience with the -6, as late as possible. Get as much wiring done as you can but then the dash has to be in place, if only clecoed, to wire switches, radios, and so on.

One very nice option is the pitot/static system that Avery sells with simple push-in pull out connectors, no wrenches needed.

We're also going to finish the panel with radio stack, Dual screens and switches on the bench before putting it in the airplane, where it can be powered up, tested, tweaked and so on. Then all the radios/xpdr/audio panel, etc. can be slid out to reduce weight.

Agreed, as late as possible, but dont let that stop you from starting a list of desired components and making paper mock-ups - its fun and can be done at home, away from the shop/hangar. The panel and your paint job are the primary places where we customize our planes and put our individual mark on them, so take the time to see what others have done, what you like/dont like, etc. When you starting narrowing down the list of components its also nice to get an idea of what your electrical loads will be like under various flight conditions. WIth modern EIs, EFIS/engine monitors, lighting etc, your loads can be amazingly low, possibly resulting in a smaller/lighter alternator.

Definitely hold off on committing until as late as you can - we see new stuff every 6 months! But it is not too early to start planning, define your requirements, and then build a concept - which will change dozens of times between now and when you are ready to commit. The earlier you start the planning, the more ready you'll be to make a good, concrete decision when you have to.
