D-sub pin crimping

I couldn't find an answer after a search so here goes my question.

It appears there are different D-sub pin styles. The D-sub pin that GRT gave me for my EFIS has 2-open ears, one for crimping around the wire and another for crimping around the wire insulation. I purchased the four way indent style of D-sub crimper like this:

which doesn't seam to work on the pins I have. Is this style of crimper for the D-sub pins and sockets that have the colored bands, like these:

What style of crimper do I need and where to get it?

Yes, the crimper you show is for the pins you also have linked.

You should ask the good folks at GRT what crimper to use.

I suspect by your description of the pins, a Molex style crimper will work.

Yep, sounds like Molex. Even with the proper tool it's not obvious how to get a proper crimp. This explains: http://www.aeroelectric.com/articles/matenlok/matenlok.html

Thanks for the info.

I have used that Molex crimper on bigger pins and its not the easiest to use to get a good crimp. The smaller D-sub pins are even harder to get a good job. Maybe I need more practice to get used to it.

Upon further inspection it looks like the D-sub pins with the colored rings have the same pin and socket diameters as the ones with the double set of ears that gets crimped in. The indent crimper is so much easier to use-one quick crimp and you got it-that I think I will just purchase the pins with the colored bands. First I'll check with GRT to make sure the machined colored band pins are compatible.

Now is there a meaning for the colored bands?

I highly recommend NOT using the open barrel contacts and sticking with the closed barrel contacts. Yes, both will fit the D-sub connector. As you already mentioned, getting a good quality crimp on the open barrel pins is difficult at best. For the TINY increase in cost for the closed barrel (M39029) contacts, you'll get a much better, more reliable crimp every time!

If you want a PERFECT crimp, you could invest ($$$) in an AFM8 crimper and the K13-1 positioner. But, if you only plan to perform a handful of crimps, the Stein crimper will do fine.

I didn't use the pins from GRT ...

...instead I used the extra pins I got from Stein when I ordered the crimper. Seems like that "4-way" pin crimper from Stein is pretty much foolproof. The open style pins are far from that.
