Cowling Inlets different length?

I am about to install my cowling pin covers. I spent several hours doing fiberglass layups and micros to get rid of the nasty cowling overbites at the forward corners. When I placed a straight edge across the front spinner plane I found that the inlet ramps are about a 1/2" different in depth to the front face of the cowl...

This distance seems too much to be coincidence and must be intended. The Aerosport cowl pins suggest installing the cover 1.75" from the front plane surface. This works fine on one side but definitely wont work on the other side. You can visually see how bad it is with just the straight edge.

Thoughts?

Build up the layer so its even?

Or just put the cowl pin covers so they look symmetrical on both sides? Hence measure from the forward part of each side rather than the spinner plane.

The engine is offset, pointing right.

Aerosport is talking about 1.75" from the face of each inlet
