Control stick movement

How far forward should the stick go? I am making a center panel and I need to know how far forward I need to position it. The bottom of the stick hits the bottom of the steering column (se picture) when it is more or less vertical. Is that normal? Should I grind off some on the stick bottom end to make swing a bit futher forward?

You will need to work that over a bit to get it to clear, it does have to clear!
