Cockpit noise

Is there an adjustment in the GNS430 that will reduce background noise that ac & other pilots hear during my transmissions? They tell me that signal strength is 5x5.

If so, will higher or lower values reduce the noise?

You can set the MIC gain lower but I would first try a mic muff or another headset. Lowering mic gain can also have the effect of lowering modulation level which can also make you hard to hear.

radio check, how do you hear...

signal strength is 5x5?

this is a bit of an irritant for me... a radio check should yield more than an automatic response of 5 by 5 or loud and clear... the numbers reported are intended to be connected to the idea of loud (carrier) and clear (voice), so 5 by 5 literally means perfect carrier and perfect voice. most transitions are far from this, more like 4 by 3. yesterday i heard a request for a radio check on a transmission that i would characterize as 2 by 1 receive a 'loud and clear'... can you hear me now...
