Carb Sync and oil

These two question were posed to me and the poster thought others may like to get involved or benefit from the answers.

I have two question....which you could answer on the forum ( I'm sure others
would benefit).

1. Carb sync tool...is there a good (I'm not sure what they are called) liquid level balancing tool you could recommend. Gauges can be out of calibration so result aren't perfect.

2. When initial engine break in is done. Is it necessary to use a special break in oil? I really liked your info regarding correct oils to run and why (I've never liked the just "trust me" approach) not knowing why.

There is no special break in oil. Use the same oil as you would when normally running the engine. The first oil change should be at 25 hrs during the required warranty inspection. For people that want to use the Aero Shell Sport Plus 4 it is rare that you could buy it locally. The best place I have seen so far on line to buy is the Oil Store on line.

As far as sync tools you're better off with liquid filled gauges than the electronic models. I have used them all. You can not diagnose with electronic gauges and you can't tell which carb you want to adjust. The electronic sync tool can split a hair, but once you disconnect the tool and hook the carb balance tube back up all that hair splitting is a mute point. With regular gauges you can tell if cables need adjusting, carbs circuits are obstructed and whether it is the main or idle circuit. You can tell which carb I need to adjust and by how much. It is much faster with a set of gauges. Buy a decent set. Yes some cheaper gauges can be off by 1"+/- vacuum or so. When you get them just pair them and pull a vacuum and see if they are the same. Most a fairly good. I usually spend about $40 on each gauge. Then make an inexpensive setup. It should last years.

Roger....what is the proper guage scale I.e. 0-15 or 0-30?????? To use?

You can at times see 20" of vacuum with a clogged idle circuit. You don't care what the actual numbers are during the sync process because it will change with field elevation and OAT's. We only care that both gauges are the same. The numbers are more for reference. I may see 15"-11" of vacuum at idle. It depends on the engine setup and OAT at that time. The colder it is outside the lower the vacuum number as a rule.
