carb intake style?

I have seen pictures of a few RV's (including Vans -7 demo) that do not have a snout style air intake on the lower cowl....what type of eng/carb/inj/? is used to clean up the lower cowl? Any advantages/disadvantages?

air induction

many engines with horizontal induction fuel injection pull cool air from cowl intake thru a duct, thus eleminating the need for the bottom intake. Most FI systems with vertical inductions can be mounted same as carb system using a filtered airbox.

Joe:

For a bit more clarity - the snout is used for carb and vertical induction fuel injection. The smooth cowling is used for horizontal induction fuel injection.

I won't get into performance but will say this,: if you want carb, you get the snout. If you use a 200 HP IO-360 you get the smooth. If you choose a 180 HP IP-360, you get your choise of induction and the resulting cowling to accommodate it.
