Bolts and washers

Working on section 10 page 22 step 3: installing hardware.

The figures show washers on the nut side but not the bolt hex head side? Is this ok, to not put a washer on the bolt head side to prevent from marring/gouging the secured material? I would think a washer on the bolt head side would prevent the material from getting gouged when tightening which can potentially crack. Most of the tightening will be done on the nut side of coarse but just curious.

Thanks

Yes, this is common. Most important thing is to get the proper grip length, e.g., don't use a washer if that would leave threads inside a hole.

Yes, it's OK and it's also the typically the way most bolts are installed. That's because in a standard installation the bolt head isn't rotating as you tighten the nut.

Also, if you look closely at the underside of an AN bolt head, you will see that there is a "built in" washer as part of the bolt head stamping. This is what prevents the corners of the bolt hex head from contacting the surface of the materials being attached.

All bolts (nuts) should be installed with a torque wrench. It's too easy to over-do, especially with AN-3s. Do determine the running torque (how much it takes to keep smoothly turning the nut when it is not near tight) for lock nuts, and add that to the number in the torque table.
