Bendix or Slick

My bendix mags are pretty worn but still working at 760 hours and it makes more sense to me and the mechanic to replace them rather than rebuild locally on the IO-320. I think Slicks are maybe a better product. Not sure. Should I replace with new or rebuilt. Stay with Bendix for the core charge rebate? Are there non-certified ones for experimental? Any help is appreciated...

I'm not sure but I think the only experimental option is to go with some type of EI and I'm not going to start the beating of that dead horse again.

Slicks seem to be the mag of choice these days but I have never run them, so I can?t speak from experience.

mags

I'd sure look into Pmags before I made up my mind to replace what I had. I run Slicks and they are acceptable for my money, but when the time comes to spend money for expensive maintenance on them, I'm sure I'll go with Pmags. Things have greatly improved in the last two years in this market.

Bendix, baby!

Stick with the Bendix units - they are far tougher than the Slicks. Not all aircraft have the physical room, but you do, so hang onto them!

Carry on!

Thanks GASMAN. I called Cliff and he sounds like the answer I was looking for. Thanks to all for the replies.

Curious why your mechanic wouldn't work on them? Mags are so easy to work on a caveman could do it. I would keep your bendix mags...inspect everything inside and throw a new set of points if the cam follower is worn.

caveman?

A well-known marketing agency will be calling RocketBob soon for trademark infringement;)
But seriously, if a guy that looks like RocketBob's avitar can do it, your mechanic should be able to do it.:D

You might still be really happy with at least one EI and a Pmag is almost a drop-in switch.

RocketBob

has it right. Keep the Bendix going, do a 500 hour inspection on them. but if you decide to change to Something else, I'll buy your Bendix cores:D

Update

The mechanics are two young guys who bought the business after the old owner died. They are covered up with work right now and have four planes in the shop ahead of mine. They are capable but are on the field with a premier repair facility and a prop shop and an engine rebuilder so I feel that everyone around here is a specialist. The turn around time will be about the same if I send the mags off and I'm willing to pay for the expertise these young guys are still building. They will reinstall the mags and time the engine when the mags come back.
I bet mags are eazy to do after you have done a few and if I could run down the parts store it would be different. The 500 hour inspection was not done and I'm betting this will be more of a rebuild that just putting in parts. I've built lots of engines from the block up but not one of them had a mag on it. It's just too far out of my comfort zone. I'd attemp it if Rocket Bob was there to hold my hand.
