Baggage door support strips and piano hinge

I'm new to the site and was hoping someone would be willing to shed some light on the firewall piano hinges. The plans dictate that the firewall piano hinges be fabricated into different lengths, the left side being longer then the right, and that they do not meet at the top. Is there a reason why the piano hinge does not transition across the top of the firewall in one continuous piece?
