Attach brackets on horizontal stabilizer

I'm a little stressed about mounting the HS and am looking for any advice on doing this. Anyone else out there go the route of drilling the HS to the fuse with the shims in place or did you follow Vans instructions? Pros and cons to either method? Also what method was used to ensure the holes were drilled perfectly vertical?

This is a grey area in the plans and the manual. I had reservations about drilling the holes through the brackets whilst on the airframe. Therefore I drilled the brackets on a pillar drill so they were vertical. Then I positioned the spacers on the brackets and did the same again. This then allows you to use a long reach drill bit - position the tailplane correctly with the spacers in place and tailplane at the right height to drill some nice holes.
