I read the article this afternoon, and thought the same thing about backups and utility. If I was really going to USE the airplane for IFR, I would want several levels of backups - and th truth is, the added weight really isn't that much - maybe twenty pounds for a autopilot and/or some backup instrumentation. That's a little dieting or a couple of gallons of fuel....
When it comes to utility, it is hard to survive in the evolving IFR system without an IFR GPS. Then again, this is a -3 with a fuselage tank, so limited fuel (compared to a -3B), and that right there would make it hard to justify a lot of expense for full instrument capability.
