AN Bolt Sizes

David Paule

Well Known Member
It's curious, but most of the bolts I've used so far seem to run one size shorter than what the plans call for. In most of these cases, I've used the thinner washers with them. In some places, I had to use the thinner washers to use the shorter bolts.

Something to keep an eye out for. We don't want to bottom the nut out on the bolt's threads.

True, but for the new builders, also make sure the shank of the bolt extends through all layers of the bolted material. Better to use a slightly longer bolt with an extra washer, so that the nut will torque properly, without bottoming out, than to not have the shank extend far enough.
